List Serve Posting - Tax Lien Discharge Fee Increase
Posted by Phyllis Lyford, Dover-Foxcroft, July 20, 2005: I have a tax collectors question. As many of you are tax collectors as well as clerks perhaps you can answer my question. Lien fees are presently $33.42. If I place my liens before the fee goes up, with the discharge coming after the increase, can I include this in my lien fee recorded on the lien? eg $38.42 $ 8.00 recording 13.00 discharging 3.00 30-day 9.00 town fee 1.00 tax collector fee 4.42 cert. fee $38.42 Thank-you in advance for any responses. Recording and Discharging fees are going up to $13.00 after September 17, 2005. Phyllis Lyford, Town of Dover-Foxcroft
Responses:
I would include the new fee. Why should the town absorb the increase! (Nicki Verill, Minot)
I am unaware of the fee increase for recording the lien discharge. Is this increase a result of notification from your Registry of Deeds or something set by the State? (Cindy D. Buckfield)
I just called the Registry of Deed office in Houlton, where I record liens and discharges for the Town of Weston, and they told me that both the recording and discharge are going up in September and that they will be sending out to all the Towns with their mailing this month the amount that will be charged. I am wondering how the town will have to handle the liens that have already been recorded when the next notice goes out to tell the taxpayer that the lien is about to expire. Can we change the discharge fee on the notice? (Margaret Frye, Weston)
