Posted by David Little, Bangor, August 25, 2008:We have had a citizen inquire about the City lowering the interest rate we are charging for past due taxes.  The Council approved the maximum for this fiscal year of 11%.  I was asked to see if any other Communities have encountered this and how it was handled.  Also could you please email back to me the rate your town is charging.

Responses:We always charge the state approved interest rate.  We explain to the taxpayers that it's an approved state rate, and it's based on a number of factors and we don't feel it necessary to revaluate the work the state has already done. (Sue Borelli, South Portland)

Sebago at the Annual Town Meeting this year voted to charge 10% due to economic times. (Michele A. Bukoveckas, Sebago)

Milbridge does what the states numbers. (Lewis Pinkham, Milbridge)

The same goes for the Town of Washington.  We present the interest rate (state approved rate) at town meeting and it passes each year. (Cyndie Bourgeois, Washington)

Town of Westport Island:  We charge 6.5% and have for the last 3 years.  Did anyone hear the outcome of the RE tax question?  How many times per year and dates for billing? (Susan Partelow, Westport Island)

In respect to Stoneham , we are the same as the Town of  Washington (Midge Silvio, Stoneham)

Durham charges the State approved rate we accept it at Town Meeting (Paulilne Paradis, Durham)
