Posted by Barbara O'Leary, Northport, August 1, 2008:During talks with our largest taxpayer, the topic of a payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) has come up. This is a new owner of the Point Lookout property and the Town has done a re-assessment of the property.   We have never dealt with a PILOT and as the Tax Collector and Treasurer, I'm not sure how this would be applied.  I am also of the understanding this could be a one time payment and does not mean they would make a payment every year.  How do other towns handle payments in lieu of taxes?
