Posted by Rose Roy, Waldoboro, May 30, 2007:I have had a situation in my office regarding a check that had a transposition in the written amount, as I was doing a night deposit after hours and could not contact the individual by phone, I changed  the amount to agree with the receipt that my customer had left my office with.  What do other towns do in this situation.

Responses: We make a copy of the corrected data and send it to the person with a note. (Leo Ouellette, Wells)

Since the bank is going to take the written amount I would get permission from the individual before changing the amount and the deposit would have to wait.  If I couldn't get in touch with him I might do a deposit without his check and then deposit that check later. (Laurie Boucher, Richmond)

The legal amount is the written amount (Dawna Myrick, Hallowell)

I never alter a check without first speaking with the person who wrote it. Could cause a problem for you if you do not bring this to their attention. (Eva Leavitt, Turner)

Not wise to alter someone else's check anyhow... (Dawna Myrick, Hallowell)

We have them come in or we mail it back and have them issue a new one for the right amount. (Town of Beaver Cove)
