Posted by Ryan Pelletier, St. Agatha, March 20, 2007: Does anyone know the Title and/or section number in law regarding the agent fee(s) allowed for processing motor vehicle registrations?

Responses: Try Title 29-A Section 201, as amended. (Claire Morrison, Sanford)

I believe you may find your answer in MRSA 29-A perhaps ss 501.  The fees allowed to be collected by the motor vehicle "agents" are governed by Statute.  At this time municipalities are allowed $4.00 agent fee for a new registration, $3.00 for renewals and, if your community does registrations for other municipalities you could charge $5.00. Example:  The Town of Turner is a truck agent and, this allows us to validate registrations for other municipalities after they have established the registration and collected their excise tax, we are allowed a $5.00 agent fee for those transactions.
