Posted by Laurie Boucher, Richmond, June 6, 2007:Do other Towns have the State Statues in your office to look at or do you view them over the internet? If you have the books do you know if Towns can get them for free?
Responses: Yes i do and no they aren't free. you should budget about $1000 a year for pocket part updates and new volumes. As for the initial cost of the books they are expensive, very expensive and you can get them on CD.
Check the Westlaw website for the costs. You might call the State Surplus property to see if they have any used sets there. Also if you call the town of Sangerville, they might have about 6 sets in a back room near the back of the building since I bought some from surplus and they made me take about 6 sets for the price of one, and I had to hold on to the property for 5 years i think it was, and they may still be holding on to them. The good thing about the books rather than online is that you get the keynotes that explain case law under the statutes which is very helpful. (Derik Goodine, Naples)
We use the on-line reference in the state government website – it's much more current than waiting for the very expensive Westlaw Books, and you don't have to find space to store them, throw the old, outdated pocket parts out. The web reference is very useful. (Stu Marckoon, Lamoine)
