Posted by Nikki Verrill, Minot, June 6, 2007: It has been brought to my attention that an error was made when calculating excise tax on a large piece of equipment owned by a company located in Minot. The company has requested a refund and that refund should include interest. We have check with MMA and they state that there is no law out there that requires us to include interest but MMA requested that I put this question out the MMTCTA memebers to see if you have any first hand knowledge regarding interest on an overpayment of excise.

We have not paid interest on an excise tax overpayment in the past. However, it has not happened very often and the ??? amounts were not very large. As MMA stated, I am also not aware of any part of the Maine Statutes that address this issue.
